Royce Buckingham always dreamed of being a published author of fantasy stories, but needed a “real career” as a prosecuting attorney to pay his bills. His novel, Demonkeeper, was inspired by themes he would see in juvenile court. “I imagined life on the streets as a monster” that would eat up so many lost children. He still maintains his day job as an attorney, while pursuing his writing. Buckingham writes in the morning before work, at lunchtime, and in the evenings after work.
During the program, Buckingham shares his story of perseverance—it took him 13 years to get his first novel published. He shows students an edited copy of his manuscript, which has over 1,000 editorial suggestions. Buckingham talks with the student audience about character development, the challenges for a first time writer, and his writing process trick.
